Female Reporter Harassed at Jets Practice

News Flash: Outfits don’t cause harassment. Harassers cause harassment. So why did the HuffPo update its story on the alleged harassment of a female sports reporter by highlighting the outfit the reporter, Ines Sainz, might have been wearing the day of the incident?

This is a multiple choice question. The answer choices are:

A. Ignorance

B. Sexism

C. All of the above

When will the media stop treating victims of sexual harassment and assault as the criminals? This is also a multiple choice question. The answer choices are:

A. Never

B. When women represent at least half of the newsroom leadership

C. When women call out sexist outlets, write letters to editors, submit op-eds and boycott advertisers at offending sites

The HuffPo isn’t alone. Deadspin.com, The Bleacher Report and The Daily Caller all found Sainz’ clothing relevant. The Bleacher Report called Sainz a trollop, a girl and questioned her access to the locker room because she is an “international sex symbol.” And the Daily Caller put together a slide show of Sainz under the headline “Baby Got Back.” Even CBS, while it didn’t mention the reporter’s wardrobe, ran a slideshow with pictures of her, including several swimsuit shots. Relevance? Last time I checked, even attractive women could be harassed.

Footnote: We’ve posted a swimsuit picture above of Mark Sanchez, the NFL player Sainz was at training to interview. What does it have to do with our story? Absolutely nothing. That’s the point.

While healthy debate is always welcome here, victim blamers are not.

This just proves you cant take women serious, what you ware shouldn’t effect how people see and treat you are you kidding me? you cant apply that logic to a single adult in any situation anywhere in the world. What kills me is this idea that the feminine agenda bolsters in silence (that women are better people than men )their sanctimonious beliefs don’t allow them to ask the simple question is it possible that she wore those clothes hoping to get a sexually charged response from the players, but to suggest that a woman would never ware clothing specifically to accentuate her body parts in hopes of attracting a response from men, is as antiquated as the idea that a woman would never lie about being raped.Did the players act irresponsibly absolutely but like my grandmother use to say idiotic behavior attracts idiots. This is clearly why men are smarter, if a man wants to be carpenter he doesn’t show up in a clown suit if he wants to be a lawyer he doesn’t show up in construction hat and work boots and if he wants to be a sports journalist he doesn’t show up in a thong and flip flops.Does she have a right to dress how she wants sure do we have a right to respond
to what she puts out into our society yes that will never change.

Good point. The cheerleaders are okay but the reporter isn’t?

I don’t get it … why do we have cheerleaders in mini shorts and sports bras throwing high kicks that show off their crotch and bump and grind to pseudo-stripper bar music, but we have a problem with a woman wearing full jeans and a polo shirt? The Jets should have behaved like gentlemen, but now they made America look even worse. Thanks guys.

Meredith Viera on the Today Show also said it wasn’t harassment. Another missed opportunity for the mainstream media to talk about real problems women face in the workplace. Sigh. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I couldn’t have said it better. It’s also quite telling that a lot of the media coverage of this incident seems to imply it is not a case of harassment at all. Of course, the media frontliners are chauvinist men who need to consult the dictionary for the correct definition of harassment.
