Anthony Weiner
Rep. Anthony Weiner, (D-N.Y.) resigned today after apologizing one more time to his constituents, neighbors and wife and thanking his staff for their work. Weiner was under mounting pressure to step down following his press conference last week where he admitted to sending improper texts, tweets and messages to women and then lying about it. The pressure intensified after stories broke that police were investigating his interactions with a 17 year old.
News outlets including NBC and AP reported this morning that Weiner’s aides were cleaning out his office and the Congressman had called Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi to inform her of his intent to step down. Then Weiner scheduled an announcement for 2 p.m. and it was there that he stepped down.
It had to happen. While there are so many political sex scandals these days and it is possible for a leader to recover, (assuming the relationships are consensual), Weiner showed such a lack of judgement, that a return to governing seemed impossible for the Congresman.
