This Veteran’s Day we honor all of America’s veterans for their willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. And at Hello Ladies we want to honor two veterans in particular, Lieutenant Colonel Tammy Duckworth and Captain Tulsi Gabbard.
Eight years ago tomorrow, the Black Hawk helicopter Tammy Duckworth was flying in Iraq was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. Duckworth was severely injured, losing both of her legs and partial use of her right arm.
During and after her recovery, Duckworth became an advocate for wounded soldiers, continuing to serve as a Major in the National Guard. Obama appointed her Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs. She also served as Director of Illinois’ Department of Veterans’ Affairs. She ran for Congress in 2006 but was defeated.
However, last Tuesday, Duckworth defeated Representative Joe Walsh and was elected to Congress to represent Illinois’ 8th district.
In 2002, Tulsi Gabbard, became the youngest person ever elected to the Hawai`i State Legislature. The following year she joined the Hawai`i National Guard and in 2004, she voluntarily deployed to Iraq.
Gabbard served for 12 months near Baghdad and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. In 2008, she deployed again, this time as a Military Police platoon leader charged with training the Kuwait National Guard’s Counter-Terrorism unit.
Last week, Gabbard became Congresswoman-elect for Hawaii’s 2nd congressional district. She will be the first Hindu in Congress.
Thank you for your service ladies.
