And, we have a new Ignorant Legislator of the Week. This time it’s New Hampshire State Representative Peter T. Hansen who referred to women as vaginas. In an email correspondence defending the stand your ground law, Hansen apparently wrote, “There were two critical ingredients missing in the illustrious stories purporting to demonstrate the practical side of retreat. Not that retreat may not be possible mind you. What could possibly be missing from those factual tales of successful retreat in VT, Germany, and the bowels of Amsterdam? Why children and vaginas of course. While the tales relate the actions of a solitary male the outcome cannot relate to similar situations where children and women and mothers are the potential victims.”
No surprise, once the email started to get media attention, Hansen apologized, and according to New Hampshire media sent an email this time saying, “I deeply regret the comment included as part of a recent email. It was inappropriate, disrespectful, even hurtful. I offer my sincerest apologies to everyone offended by the inappropriate comments and content of that correspondence.”
However, when Hansen was first challenged about his offensive email, he reportedly said, “Having a fairly well-educated mind, I do not need self-appointed wardens to A, try to put words in my mouth for political gain and B, turn a well-founded strategy in communication into an insulting accusation,” and, “If I had to do it all over again, I would use the same words. It’s clear there are many people who don’t appreciate the nuances of good writing.”
Strategy? Writing? Nope. Just really offensive. I think Rep. Hansen should read The Hello Ladies Guide to Sexism in Politics.
