Another Heroine of the Week: Edith Windsor

Edith WindsorEdith Windsor is our Heroine of the Week recipient. Yes, we have two recipients today– it’s been quite a week! Windsor is the woman behind the historic Supreme Court DOMA case and we want to acknowledge her strength.

Windsor was married to Thea Spyer. When Spyer passed away in 2009, Windsor was required to pay $363,000 in federal estate taxes. So she sued. Under Section 3 of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), marriage was a legal union between one man and one woman, and spouse was a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife.

Until today. Today the Supreme Court ruled that Section 3 of DOMA was unconstitutional. Thank you Ms. Windsor.

So glad she won, that, hopefully sooner than later, ALL people in the US can marry the person they love.
