Heroine of the Week: Wendy Davis

Senator Wendy DavisOf course our Heroine of the Week award goes to Texas State Senator Wendy Davis who staged a 10 hour plus filibuster last night. Davis was trying to prevent a vote on SB 5, a bill that would ban abortions after the twentieth week of pregnancy and limit abortions to surgical centers thereby closing probably all but five abortion clinics in the large state.

Davis was unable to sit, eat, go to the restroom, or even lean on the podium during the filibuster. Republicans tried several times to find her in violation of filibuster rules. Three strikes and the filibuster would end. When Davis sustained a third violation, debate broke out. Davis’ colleague, Senator Leticia Van De Putte asked, “Did the President hear me or did the President hear me and refuse to recognize me? At what point must a female senator raise her hand or her voice to be recognized over her male colleagues?”

The chamber erupted in people cheering, “Let her speak,” as well as jeers, “Shame, shame.” Amid the hoopla, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst tried to hold a roll call vote. He was able to complete the vote, passing the bill, but not until after midnight (the deadline for passing the bill) rendering it moot.

Go ladies go!

I was one of the 200k or so watching via the YouTube live stream… what a night, and what incredible courage from Senator Davis and all those who raised objections to this bill.

Beverly, I watched too. It was so moving. But now Gov. Perry is planning another special session on July 10 to revisit the bill.
