According to this week’s Ignorant Legislator of the Week, Representative Trent Franks, “the incidence of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low.”
According to RAINN (The Rape Abuse and Incest National Network), the annual number is closer to 3,000.
Rep. Franks made the statement yesterday, while explaning during a House Judiciary debate on his abortion bill, why he opposes an exemption for rape victims. Franks is seeking a ban on abortions after 20 weeks, and his bill, The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, would only allow women who would die without an abortion to receive one after 20 weeks.
His comments have been compared to another Ignorant Legislator of the Week recipient, Rep. Todd Akin who infamously said, “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”
