Early this morning, the Texas Senate passed HB2, a restrictive abortion bill, but not before security confiscated tampons and maxi pads from women entering the hearings. Reportedly, legislators were worried the sanitary items would be thrown at them. They apparently weren’t worried about guns that were allowed in the building.
This is the same legislation that was halted several weeks ago by Senator Wendy Davis’ marathon fiibuster. Democrats say they will now fight the bill in courts and at the polls. According to the Los Angeles Times, “In the first six months of this year, a total of 47 line items restricting abortion have been enacted in 18 states, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a New York-based research group that supports abortion rights. Perry’s signing of the Texas legislation would bring the 2013 count to 52 restrictions in 19 states.”
