On July 4, the body of 18-year-old Lauren Astley was found in a swamp in Wayland, Mass. Her former boyfriend, also a resident of Wayland, has been charged with her murder. This quiet suburban community outside of Boston has been devastated by a tragedy that has altered the lives of two local families forever. More recently, on September 30, Cindi Santana, age 17, was allegedly stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend on her LA-area high school’s campus. Last week, on October 12, hundreds went to a nearby auditorium to mourn her death. Earlier that day, the Los Angeles Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution to expand programs designed to prevent teen dating violence. In Wayland, the schools and the larger community have undertaken a number of initiatives in an effort to begin to transform grief into constructive action. One such event is a panel on dating violence, to be held on Tuesday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m. at First Parish Church in Wayland. The panel is part of a series of events hosted by the Walden Forum, a free public series that brings people together to discuss important ethical, religious, political, scientific and social topics. The forum talk will be [...]

Based on a review of Hello Ladies’ most popular blog posts in 2010, Scooby Doo, padded bras and cheerleading were top of mind this year, followed by darker discussions of sexual harassment and violence. Our story on the Cartoon Network’s redrawn Scooby Gang (Daphne got thinner, Thelma got breasts and Fred got ripped) topped the most read list. We think this story’s popularity was actually fueled by another blogger’s story. In November, Nerdy Apple Bottom shared what happened when her five year old son dressed as Daphne for Halloween and the Internet weighed in with opinions. Whether or not cheerleading is a sport and why the hell department store Primark was selling padded bras for young girls, were the second and third most popular items, respectively, followed by a link to our best buddy, the Old Spice Guy. Most of the time, we were talking about heavier topics: gang rape, Al Gore’s behavior in a Seattle hotel room, the New York Jet’s behavior toward Ines Sainz, our own story of workplace harassment and CNN’s twisted take on feminism and female empowerment. But we were pleased to see a lot of interest in our story on how to honor Women’s Equality Day [...]

Hello Ladies. Check out our October feature story, “Real Stories of Maternity Leave.” Here’s an excerpt: These stories aren’t uncommon. Many women cobble together vacation, sick time and disability so they can afford to stay home for a month or two after giving birth. Or they return to work only to learn their bonus has been cut and they’ve fallen out of favor. And many of them walk away without a fight, because they are exhausted, worried about the repurcussions, and focused on their future. Even the women who consider their experience a positive one, are working during leave, losing needed income, and returning to work sleep deprived only to express breast milk in bathrooms, airports and company parking lots. As one nonprofit fundraiser who did not want her name mentioned said, “(Having a baby) is a precious time in life and it should be very sacred. But the fact is women have to rush through the process and hurry back to work and pump in a closet.”
