Hello everyone! I am proud to say that I don't have a divorce house because I don't think we will be getting divorced with my wife. We love each other so much and we are having great time together. We are married for 20 years now and everything is going just fine.

Weebie, the entire slate of presidential challengers is alarming. The attitudes toward women are amazing. As you say, "one can only hope that for the majority of Americans it will not be good enough." Thanks for weighing in.

I am still angry with his comments. It implies that modern warfare, heavily involved with women is somehow stupid. If a man saves a man's life - he's a hero. But if he saves a woman's life then he's unprofessional, weak minded, over emotional and stupid. Modern soldiers like so many before them assess a situation as they find it taking into account who is on their team without prejudice, who may be caught in the crossfire or need protection like civilians and who the enemy is. This situation assessment for risk and action is based on training and the soldier's own capability which is assessed all through training. Why would Americans put a man so out of touch with all armed response units (including the Police Force where its professionals take these decisions daily too) in charge of huge military capability. Women's progress in the 80s & 90s is being eroded and the ignorant stereotypes put forward by men who have never taken an armed response role (even at a cadet level of training) are given the gainsay on others lives. Why? Because he has enough money to shout the loudest? That answer should not be good enough for any American and one can only hope that for the majority of Americans it will not be good enough.

Dear Helloladies,
Maybe a little off topic, however, I'm a Doula. That might be a word you aren't familiar with. The short and sweet version of that answer is that I provide women and their partners with physical, emotional and informational support during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. I attend the birth with them, continuously remaining by her side, helping to create a safe, secure place for her to give birth, whether they choose a hospital, birth center or home birth for their baby while providing my professional knowledge of childbirth to the woman and her partner. It's an amazing job, both trying and incredibly rewarding. I not only see babies being born, but families being born.
Good Job!

Thanks for the comment Michelle. At one male-dominated company, I had a heck of a time in meetings - interrupted, ideas stolen and discredited. I observed how the men reacted when they were discredited and tried using that same style one day. The response: Don't be so emotional. I pointed out that the men were admired for pushing back and I was pegged as emotional. Their reaction: evidence I was emotional! Frustrating.

This is a very powerful article. I've heard many of these speaking myths through out the course of my speaking life. As I read this, I was struck by the fact that as the myth is exposed it reveals a darker truth. For example, myth #3 about women and meetings. I am astounded and somewhat appalled that women can be perceived as both likable and competent. I think of the CEO of Kraft Foods - she definitely has a more aggressive style of communication and people believe she is competent but I don't hear anyone saying how likable she is!

It also reminds me of my life as a college debater. When I was more assertive in my style - I had judges say that I was the B word. When I spoke with more my natural style, I wasn't aggressive enough. I could never win in that double-edge sword scenario.
