Tonight, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 358, the Protect Life Act, or as some are calling it, the Let Women Die Act. While the Senate is unlikely to take up the bill and The White House has implied the President would veto it, it is still chilling to think Congress could pass a bill that, in essence, allows hospitals to refuse to perform emergency abortions – even when a woman’s life depends on it. The bill also denies federal funding to any health care plan that includes abortion coverage, which could restrict even private insurance choices for women. To see how Congress voted, click here. All but two Republicans voted for the bill and 15 Democrats joined them. Here’s the roll call. And here is Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi arguing against the bill earlier today.

Ladies, I need advice. Here’s the dilemma. What would you do if you wanted to affect positive change but you knew the change would not be well received if it was presented by a woman to an entrenched ole’ boys network? My head is telling me to get a man to make my case publicly and to stay behind the scenes for the sake of my cause. After all, isn’t the cause more important than being right? But I don’t think it’s that simple. By remaining behind the scenes, do I risk winning the battle and losing the war? My heart is telling me to own the process and the “boys” will have to just deal with it. If I take this course of action, my proposal might fail, but at least a woman will have stepped forward and spoken up for what she believes. And frankly, I think we need to see a lot more of that going on. But then again, if I do speak out and lose the battle, does the establishment get to use me as yet another proof point for why women don’t belong in the game? When Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was [...]

Last Saturday the House traded a woman’s right to choose for healthcare reform. Even though President Obama has promised that reform will not cause any U.S. citizen to lose benefits they already have, the House passed the Stupak Pitts amendment which takes away a woman’s right to full reproductive health coverage Over the weekend several representatives threatened to vote down the healthcare bill unless the House passed the amendment. The amendment, by prohibiting coverage of abortion in the public option, effectively bans abortion coverage across the board. That’s because it also prohibits private insurers from offering full reproductive coverage through the exchange to both subsidized and unsubsidized individuals. Remember: abortions are legal, medical procedures. The amendment does make a provision for an abortion rider that women could purchase in the event they are planning an unplanned pregnancy. But Planned Parenthood says these riders don’t really exist. Many claim that the amendment is in place to make sure no federal money is used to pay for abortions. But that protection was already in place. The Stupak Amendment, which was backed by the Catholic Bishops, is far more restrictive. I spent too many years in the Catholic Church to take abortion lightly, [...]
