Veterans Day 2012

SoldierToday is Veterans Day. Thank a vet and then take a few minutes to consider the unique circumstances and challenges the more than 1.8 million women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, including the more than 255,000 women that have deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, face.

Visit SWAN, the Service Women’s Action Network, Women’s Veteran’s Day site to celebrate servicewomen and hear their stories. We particularly like this video featuring Brigadier General Von Richardson.

Read this editorial from the New York Times about women in the military who are sexually assaulted or harassed and the challenges they face in receiving benefits and counseling. Boston.com also has a good post on servicewomen and healthcare. And finally, Marlo Thomas writes on similar topics today on the Huffington Post.

Here are some interesting reads from around the web:

* Feministing on sexual assault in the military

* A thought-provoking take on the Fort Hood tragedy from Care2

* A statistic laden article about women in the military from The Reporter

* And finally, a feel good story about a soldier and his dog.
